Timex Watches

Timex Watches

Fascinated as a young boy by a local watchmaker who repaired his father's watch and the precision required to work on such a small object, Hartman started learning the profession at age 14. Watchmakers were common then, a staple in even the small city of Harrisonburg, where Hartman grew up with six brothers and sisters. They're not so common now.

The number of professional watchmakers in the United States is dwindling as fewer young people enter the profession -- watchmaking used to be a family affair, with sons following in their fathers' footsteps -- and as manufacturers train their own employees to make repairs instead of selling the necessary parts to watchmakers.
"It's really not a dying field, it's just a huge scarcity all over the world," said Hartman, who can remember when every jewelry store in Richmond employed at least one watchmaker. Now there are just a handful of watchmakers in the area, he said.
