Ceramic watchmakers use synthetic raw materials including alumina and silicon carbide fired at high temperatures to create a highly scratch resistant, smooth and durable ceramic composite that warms to the touch of skin, according to Watches Infoniac and Essence Watch.The Switzerland-based Rado watchmaker began producing ceramic watches in 1986, with the luxury watchmaker International Watch Co. following with an extensive line of high-end ceramic timepieces.

Ceramic watches are unaffected by extreme temperatures, protecting the mechanical or electronic movement encased in the ceramic from freezing or baking.
